The stove governs wealth and health. 7 fixes for bad stove placement when you can't renovate.
In classical feng shui, the kitchen is one of the three most important rooms in the house (along with the front door and the master bedroom). And within the kitchen, the stove is the most important element.
Why the stove? Because in traditional Chinese households, the stove represented the family's wealth engine. A well-placed, well-maintained stove meant a well-fed family with surplus resources. A neglected or badly placed stove meant scarcity.
The problem: most of us can't move our stove. We rent, or the kitchen layout is fixed by plumbing and gas lines. Here's what you can actually do.
The person cooking should not have their back to the kitchen door. This creates "stab in the back" energy — financial losses, sudden health issues, arguments during meals.
The fix is easy and cheap: Place a mirror above the stove so the cook can see the door behind them. This is the single most effective cure in kitchen feng shui. A mirror costs $10-20 at any home goods store. I've recommended this to a dozen clients. All of them reported feeling noticeably less anxious while cooking.
If the stove is visible from the bathroom door (especially in open-plan apartments where the kitchen is near the bathroom), wealth energy flushes away.
Fix: Keep the bathroom door closed at all times. Hang a full-length mirror on the outside of the bathroom door to reflect wealth energy back into the kitchen.
Wealth energy blows out the window. This is extremely common in modern apartments.
Fix: Hang a small metal wind chime between the stove and the window. The metal element holds and stabilizes the energy. Or place a small mirror on the windowsill facing inward, reflecting the stove's energy back into the room.
Fire (stove) and water (sink) directly opposite each other create a destructive conflict. In the five elements cycle, water kills fire.
Fix: Place a green plant or a wooden cutting board between them. Wood bridges fire and water — water nourishes wood, wood feeds fire. Keep the sink clear of dirty dishes while cooking.
Another fire vs. water conflict. The fridge is water (cold storage), and the stove is fire. They shouldn't face each other directly.
Fix: Leave at least 12 inches of counter space between them. If they're directly across, place a small green object (plant, trivet) on the counter between them.
This is actually GOOD. The stove's fire activates the wealth sector. But fire can overheat wood energy. Add a green (wood) element near the stove — a plant, a green tile backsplash, or a wooden utensil holder.
If your stove is in the northwest (Helpful People / Mentor) sector, it creates fire that overwhelms the metal energy of this area. This can affect your relationships with mentors and authority figures.
Fix: Add earth elements in the kitchen (ceramic, terracotta, yellow/beige colors). Earth absorbs fire energy and stabilizes it.
A burner that doesn't work = a missing income stream. A dirty stovetop = blocked wealth. Clean your stove weekly. If a burner is broken, fix it within 30 days.
