Moving House: 15-Step Feng Shui Guide

The complete pre-move, move-day, and post-move ritual for inviting good energy into your new home.

Moving into a new home is one of the most important feng shui events in your life. The energy you establish in the first 24 hours sets the tone for years to come.

Before Moving Day

1. Choose the Right Date (择日)

Not all days are equal for moving. Avoid days that clash with your Chinese zodiac sign. General good days: avoid the 3rd, 7th, 13th, 18th, 22nd, and 27th of any lunar month for major moves.

2. Cleanse the Old Space

Before you leave your old home, thank the space. Open all windows, burn sage or sandalwood incense, and say: "Thank you for sheltering me. I leave with gratitude." This closes the energetic chapter.

3. Prepare the New Space

Visit the new home before move-in day. Open all windows for 30 minutes to exchange stale air. Wipe all surfaces with salt water (salt purifies). Place a small bowl of salt in each corner overnight.

On Moving Day

4. First In: Rice, Salt, and a Lantern

The first items to enter your new home should be: a bag of rice (abundance), a container of salt (protection), and a lit candle or lamp (illumination). The owner or eldest family member should carry these in first.

5. Open All Windows

Within the first hour of entry, open every window and door for 5-10 minutes. Let fresh chi circulate through every room. This clears any stagnant energy from previous occupants.

6. Turn on the Stove

Boil water in the new kitchen within the first 3 hours. The stove represents wealth and health. Boiling water activates the kitchen's fire energy and "cooks away" residual negative chi.

7. Make the Bed First

Set up your bed before anything else. In feng shui, the bed represents the center of your personal energy. A made bed creates stability in the chaos of moving.

Within the First Week

8. The Rice Ritual

Take a handful of uncooked rice and scatter it in each corner of every room. Leave it for 24 hours, then sweep it up. Rice absorbs negative energy. This is called "净宅" (cleansing the home).

9. Hang a Wind Chime

Place a small wind chime near the front door, inside the home. Its sound activates and circulates chi every time you enter or leave.

10. Activate the Wealth Corner

Set up your wealth corner (far left from front door) within the first week. A green plant or wealth bowl signals to the universe that prosperity lives here now.

11. Host a Small Gathering

Invite friends over for tea or a simple meal within the first 7 days. Laughter and conversation fill the new space with joyful yang energy. An empty home accumulates stagnant yin.

What NOT to Do

Moving is a ritual of transition. Honor it, and your new home will support you from day one.
