Front Door: 3 Checks That Matter
80% of your home's energy enters through the front door. Three free checks that take 5 minutes total.
Your front door is called the "mouth of chi" (气口) in classical feng shui. It's where most of your home's energy enters. I've seen apartments where everything else was perfectly arranged, but the front door was blocked by a shoe rack and a bicycle. The residents complained of feeling tired all the time and money always felt tight. We cleared the entrance, and within two weeks both reported feeling noticeably more energetic.
If the front door is blocked, jammed, or facing the wrong thing, nothing else you do will fully work. Here are three checks that cost nothing and take five minutes.
Check 1: Is Your Door Clear? (5 minutes)
Walk up to your front door from the outside. Stop where you would stand before entering. Look at the path leading to your door. Can chi flow freely?
The Audit
- Shoes piled next to the door: blocks energy before it enters. Keep no more than 2 pairs outside, neatly aligned.
- A trash can or recycling bin near the door: accumulated negative energy. Move it at least 5 feet away.
- A narrow, dark hallway leading to the door: weak chi arrives. Add a light or mirror to amplify.
- A tree, lamppost, or pole directly in front of the door: this is called a "hidden poison arrow." It sends cutting energy toward everyone who enters. In classical texts, this was considered one of the most serious feng shui issues.
The fix: Clear everything within 3 feet of the door on both sides. If there's a pole or tree directly facing the door, hang a small round mirror above the door facing outward, or place a broad-leaf plant between the door and the obstruction. The plant softens the cutting energy.
Check 2: What's Inside? (2 minutes)
Open your front door all the way. Stand where the door opens. What do you see directly in front of you?
| What you see | What it means | Fix |
| A window or glass door at the back of the house | Chi enters and leaves immediately. Wealth leaks out as fast as it comes in. | Hang a wind chime halfway between door and window. Or place a solid screen. |
| Stairs going up | Energy rushes upstairs before filling the main floor. Opportunities pass you by. | Place a plant at the bottom of the stairs to slow energy down. |
| Stairs going down | Energy drains to the lower level and doesn't circulate. | Hang a faceted crystal ball at the top of the stairs. |
| A wall 4-6 feet away | Ideal. Chi collects and circulates before entering the home. | No change needed. You have good bones. |
| A bathroom door | Wealth drains directly. The toilet flushing represents money disappearing. | Keep the bathroom door closed at all times. Hang a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door. |
Check 3: The Door Itself (3 minutes)
Now examine the door itself. The condition of your front door reflects the condition of your life.
- Paint condition: Peeling or faded paint means neglected chi. Repaint every 3-5 years. A fresh coat of paint is one of the cheapest and most effective feng shui improvements you can make.
- Hinges: Squeaky hinges represent friction in your life. Oil them. WD-40 costs $4 and takes 30 seconds.
- Color by direction: The door's color should match its direction's element:
East-facing: green (wood element) — activates family health
Southeast-facing: green or purple (wood) — activates wealth
South-facing: red or orange (fire) — activates fame and recognition
Southwest-facing: yellow or brown (earth) — activates love and partnership
West-facing: white or silver (metal) — activates creativity and children
Northwest-facing: white or grey (metal) — activates helpful people
North-facing: black or blue (water) — activates career
Northeast-facing: yellow or beige (earth) — activates knowledge
- House number: Clearly visible from the street. Not faded, not blocked by plants. If your number contains 4 (unlucky in Chinese), paint it gold or put a gold circle around it.
The 10-Minute Front Door Ritual
- Sweep the area outside your door
- Remove all items from inside the doorway (shoes, umbrellas, mail piles)
- Open the door and check what's directly in front
- Oil the hinges
- Wipe down the door surface with a damp cloth
- If you have a doormat, replace it if it's worn out. A worn doormat says "we accept worn-out energy."
Do this today. It's free, takes 10 minutes, and sets the foundation for every other feng shui adjustment you make. I've seen people report better sleep, more energy, and unexpected financial opportunities within two weeks of clearing their front entrance.
